Johannesburg - The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) will protest at the Swartruggens toll plaza on the N4 in North West on Friday.

The protest was to demand that the toll fee be reduced from R71 to R20, the union federation's North West provincial secretary Solly Phetoe said.

"We are in total opposition to the existence of this toll gate and its continued price hikes," he said.

The protest was scheduled to start at noon. Cosatu also wanted the construction of an alternative route parallel to the toll road, for the benefit of the poor.

It furthermore sought the immediate resumption of the repair work on the roads connecting Lindleyspoort and Boshoek, and Koster and Lichtenburg.

"We want to put it on record that the road that goes through Tlokweng and Pella is not an alternative to this road. It is the road that connects the two villages with Zeerust and Rustenburg, the towns where the people of these villages shop," Pheto said.
