Cape Town - November 9 2014 will mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
To honour this milestone in German history, a series of special events and museum exhibitions are planned to take place throughout the city.
"Berlin is the most modern city in the whole of Europe and like having a Design Capital every day," Ralf Ostendorf, director of market management for Visit Berlin, told Fin24.
"Berlin is also Europe's number three city after Paris and London and last year the city had 27 million overnight stays by tourists."
To him Berlin has the same momentum that New York had 40 years ago.
"Tourism is one of the main industries in Berlin and the city offers a lot in terms of music, art and entertainment," he said.
"It also has one of the leading incentives industries in the world and the meetings industry is just as important.
Ostendorf was in Cape Town for World Travel Market Africa, which takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) this week.
"We see a lot of potential in Africa and are wondering about more direct flights to Cape Town," said Ostendorf.
