Cape Tow. – European aircraft giant Airbus has started construction on its first assembly line in America. The company currently boasts over 50% of the global market for commercial aircraft.
Constructing the A320 family production line in Mobile, Alabama in US territory, Airbus has landed a blow on the nose of its major competitor, US giant Boeing.
The US is one of the world’s largest markets for aircraft and has traditionally been a Boeing stronghold.
Airbus president and CEO Fabrice Brégier said building an A320 Family Assembly Line in Mobile is groundbreaking for Airbus, as it is the company’s first US-based production facility.
“Our customers need more aircraft that cut fuel burn, emissions and operating costs.
"With this assembly line we will be able to meet our customers’ needs at their doorstep, in addition to the worldwide demand for these efficient aircraft.
"When this assembly line opens, we will be the only one to assemble aircraft in Asia, the Americas and Europe.”
The new Airbus assembly line will facilitate assembly of A319, A320 and A321 aircraft. The A320 neo is Airbu's main rival to Boeing's massively successful 737 Max. The aircraft models are primarily used for domestic travel.
Aircraft assembly at Mobile is planned to begin in 2015, with first delivery of a Mobile-assembled aircraft in 2016.
At full production, the assembly line and associated facilities would produce up to four aircraft a month which directly translates into employing as many as 1 000 high-skilled workers.
