Johannesburg - Parastatal Transnet has signed a contract to acquire 100 new diesel locomotives from General Electric SA Technologies (Gesat).

The locomotives would be used primarily in its general freight business, Transnet said in a statement on Friday.

Acting group CE Chris Wells said the parastatal was "thrilled" at being able transfer technology into South Africa from the original equipment manufacturer.

Wells was referring to Transnet's continued participation in the government-inspired competitive supplier development programme (CSDP).

"This is the biggest CSDP commitment by Transnet which has pioneered this programme since its inception more than a year ago."

The parastatal would expand the CSDP programme to the acquisition of port equipment as well.

According to the agreement with Gesat, the first locomotive would be delivered in 2011, the last in 2012.
