Johannesburg – Government has confirmed it will move ahead with the appointment of a permanent CEO to replace
Maria Ramos at logistics utility Transnet, after one of the main contenders was found guilty of corporate misconduct.
Public Enterprises Minister
Barbara Hogan confirmed on Monday Transnet would appoint a chairperson in July at its annual general meeting, and that "this would then be followed by the appointment of a group chief executive".
Spokesperson Ayanda Shezi would not commit to a date for the appointment of a CEO to fill the position, which has been vacant for more than a year.
Transnet always maintained it had made its recommendation to Hogan, as required by its governance and shareholding procedures. However, Hogan previously said she was waiting for disciplinary procedures against Transnet Freight Rail CEO
Siyabonga Gama to be concluded before making the appointment.
Chris Wells has been acting CEO since Ramos' departure in April 2009.
Gama, who was favoured by some influential roleplayers for the job, has been found guilty of three governance breaches. Those inelude unfairly and unprocedurally awarding tenders to Communications Minister
Siphiwe Nyanda's security company.
It seems all over for Gama's career at Transnet. "Gama was found guilty of each of the charges brought against him, including one of irretrievable breakdown in relationship with Transnet," said the independent ruling in the case.
