Johannesburg - Africa's biggest fixed-line phone firm Telkom said on Thursday it does not intend to launch a new mobile phone operator in South Africa after Britain's Vodafone takes control of Vodacom.
However the company said it was seeking a roaming agreement with an existing operator that would allow Telkom customers to make mobile phone calls by piggybacking on another company's network.
Vodafone, the world's biggest mobile phone group by revenue, announced on Thursday it had agreed to buy a further 15% stake in Vodacom from Telkom for R22.5bn, giving it control of the mobile operator.
"We don't intend to be a fourth mobile phone operator in South Africa," Telkom CEO Reuben September, told a conference call on Thursday.
Three mobile operators, including Vodacom, already run networks in South Africa.
