Johannesburg - Telecommunications group Telkom on Monday filed its proposed annual tariff adjustments with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa, seeking an overall increase in its basket of products and services of 1.7%.

If approved, the new tariffs will become effective on August 1.

Telkom has proposed that the minimum charge for postpaid local calls (0-50km) remain unchanged, but that per second tariffs for normal hours and after-hours calls increase by 4.2c and 2.1c per minute respectively. The tariffs for long-distance calls (>50km) would remain unchanged.

Prepaid as well as postpaid residential and business line rental charges will increase by 5.5%, while the Waya-Waya annual subscription will go up from R120 to R130 per year. Prepaid local and long distance calls are to cost 10% more.

The cost of outgoing cellular calls and outgoing calls to Neotel will remain unchanged, as well as monthly subscription charges for DSL, Do Broadband and Telkom Internet.

Overall, the impact on international calls rates will be 0%, although tariffs to certain destinations could either increase or decrease.

Telkom Closer 1 and 2 subscription charges will increase by 7.4% and 5.6% respectively. Current tariffs will remain unchanged for the Telkom Closer 3, 4 and 5 calling plans.
