Johannesburg - South African trade union Solidarity has accepted an average wage increase of 10.5% for all its members in phone group Telkom.
Solidarity, which represents 4 000 employees in Africa's largest fixed-line network operator Telkom, said on Thursday the increase would be backdated to April 1.
The union added that its members would receive an increase of between R852.26 and R1 671.50 rand per month, depending on their job level. Members' "standby" allowance for being on call in case of emergency would also rise by 10.5% to R443 per
week.
Wage talks were opened after a sharp rise in local inflation to a 5-1/2 year high of 10.9% in May - surpassing a level laid down under an agreement signed in 2006 above which negotiations could be restarted.
On July 10, Solidarity assured its members they would keep their jobs despite restructuring plans at Telkom which the company has said would include outsourcing among its approximately 24 880 workers.
"No employee affected by Telkom's planned outsourcing process may be retrenched as a direct result of the process," Kleynhans said.
