Johannesburg - Telecommunications groups Telkom [JSE:TKG] and MTN Group [JSE:MTN] are set to appear before the complaints and compliance committee of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) on Wednesday, to settle a dispute over interconnection rates paid for carrying calls on each other's behalf.
The industry regulator said it had received notification of the dispute in writing and had three choices: it could impose conditional terms for interconnection rates, propose rates to be negotiated, or refer the dispute to the complaints and compliance commission. It decided on the third option.
Details of the dispute are sketchy, but all will be revealed at the hearing when both companies will make their case and the committee decide on how to proceed.
A plan for the lowering of interconnection rates was unveiled by Icasa in April and has since been delayed by objections from telecommunications providers.
