Johannesburg - Workers at fashion and food retailer Woolworths (WHL, Woolies) are preparing to strike for union recognition, union leaders said on Thursday.
"Workers have concluded that Woolworths tag line 'the difference' is nothing more than a commitment to keep the union out of the establishment," said Mduduzi Mbongwe, spokesperson for the South African Commercial and Catering Workers' Union.
The industrial action will resume in the next few weeks. Saccawu had already approached the CCMA to conclude a determination on strike rules that will include picketing on the shop floor - i.e. inside stores - given shopping mall landlords' attitudes and undue interference on picket lines
within malls, the union said.
