Cape Town - Standard Bank has lashed out at reports implying its representative said that the banks levied fines to "teach clients manners".
It said its head of retail banking in South Africa, Sim Tshabalala, never said the penalties on overdrawn accounts were to teach customers manners but that they were forced to levy penalties to deter fraudulent and undesirable behaviour.
Fin24's sister publication Sake24 reported on Thursday that members of the commission referred to the practice as teaching good manners.
