Johannesburg - Standard Bank Group [JSE:SBK] and Sasbo, a union representing employees in the financial sector, were told to talk to each other on Thursday morning over retrenchment plans before appearing in the Labour Court, a court official said.
Sasbo wanted the court to grant an urgent interdict against Standard Bank, to prevent it from firing staff.
The bank was planning to retrench 1 145 permanent employees and 600 contract staff in South Africa.
A court official said the parties were told to attempt to resolve the matter before they appeared in court at noon.
The bank said the retrenchments were necessary for its long-term sustainability.
Sasbo represents 15 400 employees at Standard Bank.
