Johannesburg - Retailer Shoprite jumped more than 9% on Monday after it joined the JSE Top-40 following a rejig of the blue-chip index.
By 15:20, the stock gained 9.8% to R47.20.
The JSE said earlier this month Shoprite, South Africa's biggest grocery chain by market value, would be added to the blue-chip index from September 22.
Shoprite replaces industrial group Barloworld, which fell 0.6% to R61.84 on Monday.
