Johannesburg - Africa's biggest supermarket chain Shoprite Holdings Ltd notched up a "satisfactory" increase in sales over Christmas and said on Friday it met its own forecast for the period.
"We experienced a satisfactory increase in sales over the festive season and the Shoprite group did achieve its budgeted figures for this period," marketing director Brian Weyers said in a statement read by a company spokesperson.
She declined to give further details but said a trading statement would be issued early next week.
Shoprite's main rival Pick 'n Pay told Reuters on Thursday the company beat its own forecasts with percentage revenue growth in the mid-teens in December as higher prices and new stores helped it offset a consumer downturn.
