Cape Town - Gross gambling revenue in South Africa reached nearly R10bn in the financial year 2004/05, according to the National Gambling Board's annual report tabled at Parliament.

Gross gambling revenue increased by 20% in 2004/05 compared to the previous financial year. At the same time, a 21% increase in gambling taxes and levies was registered compared to 2003/04.

The report, signed by the board chairperson Chris Fismer, indicates that gambling revenue had risen from just over eight billion rand in the previous year 2003/04, which itself was up from R6.5bn in the year 2002/03.

Gambling levies and taxes amounted to R900m in 2004/05, up from about R750m in 2003/04.

The bulk of gambling revenue is collected in Gauteng province - 44% of revenue in 2004/05-- followed by the Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal, which contributed 16% respectively.

The other provinces make up the remainder - with the North West contributing 7% and the Eastern Cape 8% in 2004/05.

Casinos represent the largest portion of gross gambling revenue - about 87.6% of revenue.

Betting makings up nearly 12% while other games like bingo and limited payout machines make up 0.5%.

The report noted that the contribution of casinos to the gross gambling revenue had gradually decreased over three years from 90.3% in 2002/03 to 89% in 2003/04.
