Johannesburg - Shoprite Holdings [JSE:SHP] chairperson Christo Wiese, who was stopped by UK customs in April last year with about £675 000 in his luggage, has been forced to give up the money, Moneyweb reported on Friday.

He was due to board a flight to Luxembourg.

The website quoted a statement from the UK Border Agency, saying that the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court was satisfied the cash was associated with criminality and had made an order for forfeiture. The total sum was £674 920.

Wiese was quoted as saying that he had no response, and that "there have been no criminal charges laid" by the UK authorities.

Moneyweb reported earlier this year that Wiese had been stopped at Heathrow Airport with the cash. When asked why he was travelling with such a large sum of money, he had said that he wanted to move the money to Luxembourg for tax reasons.

Under UK law, travellers entering or leaving the UK with more than £1 000 in cash may be asked to explain the purpose and source of the money, the website said.
