Johannesburg - Unions upped their rhetoric against Walmart
on Wednesday, even as it vowed an appeal would not derail its R16.5bn takeover
of Massmart Holdings [JSE:MSM].
Walmart and Massmart said an appeal against the Competition
Tribunal's approval for the deal was no threat. The SA Commercial Catering and
Allied Workers Union on Tuesday lodged an appeal at the Competition Appeal
Court.
The union said it would give details of exactly what it
hoped to gain from the appeal after studying the tribunal's reasons, published
on Wednesday.
At the Cosatu policy conference Philip Jenning, general
secretary of global trade union Uniglobal, declared war on the retail giant.
"We have a new battle. This is serious. This demands action. For every one job created by Walmart, 1.4 jobs are lost," said Jennings.
He again claimed that 570 jobs were lost ahead of the
merger.
Walmart/Massmart undertook to rehire more than 500 workers
as and when vacancies arise as part of the terms of the deal.
