Pretoria - A trade union could consider legal action if Walmart's $2.4bn takeover bid for Massmart Holdings [JSE:MSM] is approved without conditions, a union official said on Tuesday.
The Competition Tribunal is currently holding hearings on whether to allow the US retailer to buy a 51% stake in discount retailer Massmart.
The South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu), which has opposed the deal from the start, wants to ensure that no jobs will be cut and local suppliers will not be squeezed by Walmart.
"We can start a legal process to ensure that our concerns are addressed in this deal ... that is one of the options open to us," Lucas Ramatlhodi, a Saccawu official, told Reuters outside the hearings.
