Top UK barrister for Wiese appeal

Cape Town - Christo Wiese, who chairs Pepkor, Shoprite and Tradehold, has engaged the services of British barrister Clare Montgomery to appeal the Westminster Court decision that he should forfeit about R7m in cash.

London newspaper The Independent reported that Shrien Dewani, husband of murdered bride Anni Dewani, had also employed Montgomery's services.

The paper said Montgomery is one of the foremost barristers in Britain and has represented companies like BAE Systems and GlaxoSmithKline.

Wiese's run-in with the British legal system began in April last year, when he was caught with £647 920 in cash in his luggage at City airport in London.

He had been travelling from London to Luxembourg, where he planned to deposit the money in a safe.

The court was of the opinion that he had contravened British regulations, which stipulate that an individual is not allowed to take more than £1 000 cash out of the country without permission.

The court was persuaded that the money Wiese wanted to take out of the country was associated with crime and should be confiscated.

Wiese plans to appeal the decision.
