Richemont's Rupert to go on sabbatical

Johannesburg - Billionaire Richemont [JSE:CFR] chairperson Johann Rupert will take a year-long sabbatical after the group's annual meeting in September, Business Day reported on Friday.

The 62-year-old Rupert wanted to visit Antarctica and to read "about 50 books," the newspaper reported.

"After 25 years, I think I have the right to just take a break," it quoted Rupert as saying.

"I just want to be the master of my own time for a while. It’s ironic that someone in the watch business isn’t in control of his time."

According to Business Day, while Rupert was "perfectly healthy" and had even stopped smoking, losing several friends to heart attacks had swayed his decision.

Rupert told the newspaper he had had to turn down an offer to attend the Rugby World Cup in 2011, and invitations to go fly-fishing.
