McDonald's to stop selling halaal food

Cape Town - McDonald's will stop offering halaal foods at two US franchisees, following a lawsuit settlement, CNBC reported on Tuesday.

The two stores located in Dearborn were the only outlets in the State of Michigan that served halaal food.

McDonald's said in a statement that the decision to discontinue offering halaal foods was done in an attempt to focus on the national core menu.

"We take into account local and dietary preferences, however, these items were offered as an exception to McDonald's national core food menu in these two restaurants only," McDonald's said in a statement.

However, this decision also comes after a $700 000 settlement between McDonald's and a customer who filed a lawsuit in 2011, the news agency reported.

The customer alleged that the menu items were not consistently halal.

Tough times

The Business Insider reported in April that the fast food giant in the US was demanding that workers possess a Bachelors degree to qualify for a cashier's post.

In a job advert in a small Massachusetts town calling for a full-time cashier, McDonald's insisted only college graduates need apply.

McDonald's, in April, reported a first-quarter profit that fell short of Wall Street's expectations, as sales at established US restaurants dropped 1.2% in a tough environment.

The "challenging" global environment and profit pressures were expected to persist, chief executive Don Thompson said at the time.
