Billions spent on Valentine's Day

Cape Town - A survey conducted in 2013 revealed that worldwide over $4.4bn was spent on gold, silver and diamonds for Valentine’s Day alone, the American Retail Federation reported.

Another US survey found that 53% of women said they would end their relationships if they didn’t get anything for Valentine’s Day, according to the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association.

The average number of wedding proposals around Valentine’s Day each year, is 220 000, reported Time.

Between 75-80% of the world’s natural diamonds are used for industrial purposes and 20-25% for gemstones.

It is the chemical and physical properties of this mineral that give it the superior cutting ability for industrial use.

Approximately $1.5bn worth of diamonds a year come from South Africa.

The My Girl diamond cut is the first diamond cut to originate from South Africa.

Designed and patented by Yair Shimansky, it is exclusively available at Shimansky.

The Cape Town Diamond Museum, situated in the Clock Tower area of the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, is a non-profit organisation founded by Shimansky to create a new appreciation for diamonds.

At the Cape Town Diamond Museum, visitors can witness a 3 billion year old story unfold from a diamond’s formation to the final polished stone.

The discovery of diamonds in South Africa in 1867 sparked a historic diamond rush.

Within a decade, 95% of all diamonds were coming from South Africa.
