Johannesburg - Transnet has suspended Siyabonga Gama, the chief executive of Transnet Freight Rail, Business Report said on Wednesday.
Gama, who is said to be one of three short-listed candidates to take over as CEO of the parastatal, will remain suspended until the outcome of disciplinary action on allegations of irregularities relating to two procurement contracts, the newspaper said.
Themba Langa of Langa attorneys, who represents Gama, confirmed the suspension.
He told Business Report Gama was not given reasons in the letter of suspension.
"Sources close to the matter said Transnet called a meeting with the extended executive committee meeting for today [Wednesday].
"Last week, Transnet announced it had instituted disciplinary action against Gama," the newspaper said.
Previously Langa had said the charges were an attempt to "persuade the Cabinet not to confirm Gama to the group chief executive position at Transnet".
Charges related to a tender awarded to General Nyanda Security Advisory Services and another to buy 50 locomotives, the newspaper reported.
