Cape Town - Unless they were willing to brave jetting into the inclement British weather, South African shareholders in beer giant SABMiller will not be party to Wednesday's general meeting in London to consider a recently-proposed empowerment transaction.

A SABMiller spokesperson told Fin24.com that given the largely technical nature of the meeting, there would be no external link for SA-based shareholders.

This might disappoint a large band of local SABMiller shareholders, who could have expected the giant brewing group to at least consider a video or audio link to the general meeting.

Shareholders Association chair David Sylvester said SA backers' lack of access was disappointing. "This is the danger of dual-listed stocks. What recourse do local shareholders really have?"

The SABMiller spokesperson said the company would publish a transcript of proceedings shortly after the meeting.
