Johannesburg – Sowetan, Avusa's (AVU) title that has been in existence for almost 30 years, will not shut down, but some retrenchments could be underway, the national daily newspaper's publisher Jason Sequeira said on Wednesday.
Up to 11 jobs are believed to be on the line.
Sequeira said the newspaper was undergoing a restructuring process which formed part of a group initiative by Avusa Media.
He said this restructuring was not isolated to the paper, adding that in previous years both the Herald and the Dispatch had been affected.
"As a group, our strategy is to create editorial structures that are productive and cost-effective, especially in light of the country's changing publishing landscape and the increasing demands on local media," Sequeira said.
He said the restructuring might result in some retrenchments, indicating that he was unsure of the number as yet.
"The company has undertaken to do whatever possible to ensure the number of employees affected is limited," he said.
"I also want to reiterate that the Sowetan will not be closing down. We will be celebrating our 30th anniversary next year and hope to continue in our role as the paper for people "In the know and on the move" for many years to come," he said.
