Johannesburg - Hundreds of Gauteng Pick n Pay workers on Friday were picketing
at Rhodes Park in Kensington against alleged racism within the
company.
Dressed in red t-shirts protesters were singing struggle songs
and yielding placards.
One of the placards read: "Pick n Pay inspired by racism".
SA Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union shop steward
Vulisango Gomana said racism was rife within Pick n Pay across the
country.
He said opportunities such as promotion and recognition for
working hard were only given to white people.
"Black people get paid less compared to their white counterparts
while they are doing the same job."
Gomano said they were calling on the company to do away with
racism and to introduce skills development throughout their
branches.
The marchers will hand over a memorandum of their grievances at
the head office of Pick n Pay in Kensington.
They will then go back to work on Saturday and wait 14 days for
the company to respond.
