Johannesburg - Northam Platinum [JSE:NHM] said on Friday that it had resumed operations at its Zondereinde mine, after shutting down a shaft last week due an accident that killed two workers.
The platinum miner said it lost 7 000oz of production during the shut down that began on on July 20.
About 5 000 employees at Zondereinde mine stopped work for the day on Thursday to protest safety measures following the accident, which was triggered by a "fall of ground".
"The management of Northam advises that underground operations resumed last night, Thursday 29 July 2010," the company said in a statement.
Northam produces 300 000 ounces of platinum group metals a year, a sliver of the 2.5 million ounces from rival Anglo Platinum [JSE:AMS], the world's largest producer.
Shares of Northam Platinum edged lower in Johannesburg trade, giving up 0.04% to 4 467c as of 11:17, compared with a weaker 1.22% All-Share index.
