Nestle formula 'poses no risk'

Johannesburg - Nestle on Thursday assured consumers that its Lactogen 1 formula was fully compliant with specifications and posed no health risk.

The company had revalidated the quality of the formula.

Said spokesperson Theo Mxakwe: "(We) can confirm that all our infant formula products, including Lactogen 1, are fully compliant with specifications in line with Nestle's good quality standards and pose no health risk to consumers."

A batch of 1 400g of Lactogen 1 formula produced on November 6 last year was recalled and found to have had higher than regulated levels of iron, zinc and copper.

All stock produced was returned to Nestle.

Although Nestle attended to six cases of babies who fell ill after consuming the formula, it was adamant that the consumption of its formula was not the cause of the illness.

Mxakwe said they have a doctor's certificate to prove this.

The batch recalled was Batch Code 73100179 L1, produced in South Africa, and was recalled in South Africa, Botswana and Zambia.

Delivery of Lactogen 1 and all other infant formula products to the trade has resumed. However, delayed deliveries may be experienced by some outlets, said Mxakwe.
