Johannesburg - Telecommunications group Neotel announced on Wednesday it has launched prepaid services on its network.
These include voice, SMS and basic internet connectivity.
Said Wandile Zote, head of corporate communication at Neotel: "For many South Africans, the ability to choose prepaid as a payment method is not just a lifestyle option - it's an economic necessity."
He added that Neotel's new prepaid service will be delivered over its fixed wireless service under the brand NeoConnect Lite Pre-paid.
Zote said this is comparable to Neotel's post-paid services, where connectivity will be instant with no waiting for installation.
Rates for the service start at 50c per minute for voice calls to other Neotel users and R1.20 per minute to cellphones during off-peak periods, or R1.50 during peak calling hours. The data charge is 20c per MB.
Neotel said that top-up vouchers will be available for purchase through the same sales points as its other existing services, as well as regional Sasol [JSE:SOL] forecourts in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Pietermaritzburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. Vouchers are currently available only in R100 values.
The service makes use of a wireless desk phone device that can be plugged into a computer for internet access.
Neotel is majority-owned by India's Tata Group via Tata Communications and Tata Africa Holdings.
