Johannesburg - South Africa's bank regulator told Reuters on Monday it was too early to comment on HSBC's bid for Nedbank Group [JSE:NED].

"They still have to submit all the applications they need to go through and then we'll need to our apply our minds to it," said Errol Kruger, Registrar of Banks in South Africa.

HSBC, Europe's biggest lender, said on Monday it is in exclusive discussions with Old Mutual [JSE:OML] to buy South Africa's fourth-biggest bank, Nedbank.
