Johannesburg - The National Union of Mineworkers will be preparing for a national strike over the liquidation of Pamodzi Gold, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) said in a statement on Tuesday.
Cosatu in the North West said it supports its affiliate NUM against Pamodzi mine management "who want to get rich at the expense of the poor mineworkers".
"The workers have been working underground, not receiving their salaries for months, and enduring poor mining health and safety conditions, with no food or water for months," said Cosatu.
It said it rejected the suggestion by provisional liquidators JIC Mining, which "want to employ only 700 and leave over 3 000 workers unemployed".
Member of NUM are expected to meet over the possible national strike on Wednesday.
Pamodzi Gold's mines on the East Rand and in the Free State were last week put into provisional liquidation. These mines join the company's Orkney operation, which was placed into provisional liquidation last month.
Provisional liquidators put the total liabilities of the mines under provisional liquidation at R1.6bn. They have also estimated that Pamodzi's workforce totalled 8 900 while Pamodzi said it had more than 12 000 workers employed at its mines.
