Wildcat strike at Amplats ends

Johannesburg - Workers of the Anglo Platinum [JSE:AMS] (Amplats) Thembelani and Khuseleka mines returned to work on Tuesday, the company said.

"Yes they have returned to work in both mines, Thembelani and Khuseleka 1. Everything is normal," spokesperson Bongeka Lwana said.

On Monday, Amplats said about 5600 workers had joined the strike at the two mines.

Workers were demanding the reversal of the suspension of 19 Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) shop stewards who were suspended for participating in an illegal sit-in.

Workers were also demanding that the company suspend the current section 189 process and proceed with wage negotiations.

"They are also demanding that the company provide a guarantee that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will not be allowed to return to the operations," the company said in a statement on Monday.

Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa confirmed on Tuesday that the miners had returned to work.

"Yes they have reported for duty today [Tuesday]," he said.

"The branch leadership was allowed to report to work as they were suspended last week Friday."

He said the workers had embarked on the strike because the union offices were closed after the suspension and they had nowhere to lodge grievances.

Lwana said she could not confirm whether the shop stewards had returned to work.

"The company continues to engage with union leadership," she said.
