Rubber bullets fired to disperse miners

2012-10-04 19:10

Johannesburg- Police fired rubber bullets and teargas to disperse a group of Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) mineworkers in Nkaneng, near Rustenburg, on Thursday.

The group had gathered at the top of a hill, and had barricaded roads linking Rustenburg and Marikana with rocks and burning tyres.

When onlookers from a nearby informal settlement started stoning the police vans and insulting police. They had to call for reinforcements.

A number of police nyalas were at the informal settlement and police were positioned at its entrance.

"We know you are here to shoot... It will never happen," the onlookers shouted.

Workers at Amplats have been on a wildcat strike since 12 September, demanding a R16 000 monthly salary and allowances.

Since then, shops and cars have been burnt. On Monday, six cars driving past the mine's shafts were burnt and two shops were looted and burnt.

One of the shops belonged to a Pakistani man, and was situated next to the mine's Jabula hostel, in Sondela.

"We are going to sleep in Thekwane. It is not safe here. You do not know what could happen during the night," said a man who was leaving the area with his wife.

"If they know we have left, I might be killed or my shack torched," said the man, who identified himself only as Peter.

Mineworker Jack Mxegilen said he was prepared to die for R16,000 they were demanding.

"I work hard and get paid little. We want that money," he said.

Despite threats of dismissal, workers remain defiant, sticking to their demand.

Their leaders spent the day in a meeting near the Rustenburg Civic Centre. They wanted to be granted a permit to hold a mass meeting.

'burning rocks'? How does that happen?

      FinalJustice - 2012-10-04 19:24

Amazing, the standard of reporting on this site, isn't? I have to stop reading news here. Shocking.

      lownabester - 2012-10-04 19:26

hahaha I would love to know that too.

      clive.priestman - 2012-10-04 19:27

      Onke Mdingi - 2012-10-04 19:34

Slip of a finger, I suppose.

      hermann.hanekom - 2012-10-04 19:58

If you can destroy the economy surely you can burn rocks - LMAO

      sven.gohre - 2012-10-04 20:21

Maybe they were throwing lumps of coal, LMAO

      desertratbkf - 2012-10-04 20:40

Guys, I happened to pass by this site after not having read anything by News24 for about 3 weeks. They are as uselessness as the striking miners and every cANCer official! Illiterate is the word that comes to mind!

      heathway.master - 2012-10-04 21:15

What I would like to see is our military chemical experts develop an additive to their water cannons that makes people go green, feel like they are dying, and vomit and have such severe diarrhoea that their anus feels continuously on fire. The chemical would however have no long term effects whatsoever, and be out of the system in 48 hours. Such a development would I feel seriously dent the enthusiasm for violent, destructive and mindless animosity shown by the present batch of strikers.

      mark.singh.9889 - 2012-10-05 07:46

Im more concerned why rubber bullets were used and not live ammo

      simon.stamp.98 - 2012-10-05 08:21

'rocks and burning tyres' I don't see anything wrong with this. If I say: a man with his pregnant wife, it doesn't mean they are both pregnant! Obvious the rocks are just on the roads while the tires are burning.

      husaberg.twostroke - 2012-10-05 09:22

Shoot these bastards with real bullits like the marikana deal, now that was brilliant.,

      andrew.gordon.505523 - 2012-10-05 11:07

@simon. stamp. They edited that article so it's correct now

  • daantjie.botha - 2012-10-04 19:21

Better get used to this.... Marikana has set the standard of any other strike in the future... Thigs are not looking up!

  • kim.buren - 2012-10-04 19:30

About time the police stop pussy footing around and get real with real ammo

      boltonbarry - 2012-10-04 19:35

Snipe the instigators and rubber bullet the media. Used to work like a charm. NO instigator to incite and no media to report = no riot

  • Stewart Croucamp - 2012-10-04 19:40

The police need to use real bullets. Stop these criminals.

  • Brian Dorning - 2012-10-04 19:45

oh my word, the saps are going backwards!

  • makavelithedonkilluminati.shakur - 2012-10-04 19:47

These miners are just attention seeking spoiled brats. Was it even neccessary to burn down shops and cars? Sometimes I hate my black brothers for behaving like uncivilized people.Forsure whites are probably laughing @ us,mxm.

      mfanafuthi.samson.9 - 2012-10-04 20:33

Whites will laugh bcos of inequality.since I was born I didn't see a white general worker even a stupid is a forman.leave our brothers fight for what they want and shut your mouth.this is how they get what they want.

      Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-10-04 21:04

Mfana. - never seen a white general worker. What cave/bush have you been in all your life???

      sthembiso.jali.58 - 2012-10-04 21:15

When your back is against the wall you do anything for your voice to be heard, don't feel ashamed about your race but your government. Time 4 change in anc.

      khethu.ndlovu.3 - 2012-10-04 21:27

Shakur, i strongly doubt your status, whites have been loughing and calling us names for the past hundred years, now i can assure you, they are not loughing no more, they are scared, very scared, its just that they wont admitt to a black man, they never thought a black man can be this rebelious, they thought we will be humble until the end of time, the education that was fed to us made sure we remained foolish and called them baas and kleinbaas whenever they appeared, it thought us to say dankie missus when your were given a rough boot on your behind, no more, do you think they'll lough at what we are doing now? No! No! Dont think so, their underpants are forever soiled.

      gjfnicholson - 2012-10-04 22:07

The stupidity level of you okes are like the universe... Currently expanding.

  • Johnelle Olivier - 2012-10-04 19:50

@clive, it must be subsidised! or someone(JM?) promised to reimburse them

  • sthembiso.jali.58 - 2012-10-04 20:03

somehow i feel sorry for the police, having to deal with all this chaos while zuma is enjoying life with his wives.

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-10-04 20:27

I totally agree with you - they could be doing proper police work and they are certainly needed in our crime-ridden country. And Zuma will take another 6 weeks to respond and tell the international market they should really not be concerned about investing in our stable, investor friendly country!

  • adrian.tyler - 2012-10-04 20:17

N i so wish you were.

  • makavelithedonkilluminati.shakur - 2012-10-04 20:33

I hate saying this because white people love hearing black people say this. But honestly speaking, whites don't act this way, this behaviour is totally embarrassing our black nation and might chase investors away.

      henk.vanrensburg.31 - 2012-10-04 20:42

must say. White afrikaners do not act this way.

      khethu.ndlovu.3 - 2012-10-04 20:45

Why wuld they want to act 'this way' they are our corruptors, and zuma and his allies dont act 'this way' they are on the same league as whites. Wait till the economy is reversed then you can say it again.

      khethu.ndlovu.3 - 2012-10-04 20:53

@shakur, when mandela and others fought for political freedom they were shot and teargased, they never acted 'this way' if they did you wouldnt be typing this now, or would you?

      Johann Enslin - 2012-10-04 20:54

@henk, they did, almost 100 years ago. Now stop making this a race issue. Uneducated idiots is what they are.

      Johann Enslin - 2012-10-04 20:59

@khethu...stop talking out of your a hole...because of idiots like you people tend to stereotype the lowest denominator.

      khethu.ndlovu.3 - 2012-10-04 21:14

Enslin is correct, they did when they wanted freedom from british, even more so, they were the filthiest scums ul never come across. Now its our turn, they' never hand it to you, not the afrikaaners, never.

      mfanafuthi.samson.9 - 2012-10-05 05:25

They can't act like this if u are doing the same job they earn tripple your pay.why must they while they earn pumpkins and u earn peanuts.that's not the same size idiot

      timmy.ditsele - 2012-10-05 09:47

@makaveli.Obviously you only watch/listen/read news24. Once in a while please turn you're tv on and see all the carnage going on in the world.Dont be a fool and think that only blacks do these things.People will react with anger if andwhen they are frustrated. The white people of SA dont have to toyitoyi like us coz they dont have to.Privilaged.

      heini.botes - 2012-10-05 12:09

@Timmytomas...Generalizing much?? Not even going to respond with an answer to this 'statement' of yours

  • sthembiso.jali.58 - 2012-10-04 20:41

@ christelle james.7 you are 100% correct, thats what he will be busy doing over the weekend

  • desertratbkf - 2012-10-04 20:43

Cele - or whoever (some thief) said, "Shoot to kill!) Best words ever! But still, put the criminal in jail!

  • megan.perrow - 2012-10-04 22:14

More and more strikes now and why?????? Because they know they can get away with it,same when the cops did their job whoaaaaa massive outrage. One question, when we end up being another Zimbabwe is there still going to be outrage, let the cops do their jobs, if the strikers want to dig this country into a grave its only fitting they dig their own graves first! I for 1 am sick of it, they're not the only ones battling. SERIOUSLY WE ALL NEED TO START THINKING ABOUT OUR CHILDREN'S FUTURE IN OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY WHICH STRIKERS SEEM HELL BENT ON DESTROYING!

  • megan.perrow - 2012-10-04 23:44

Here's an idea, SAVE THE RHINO AND POACH THE STRIKERS :p The rhino at least brings tourism and boosts the economy :)

  • henry.vanderburpenfart - 2012-10-05 00:43

I'll bet there was an awkward moment between the order being given and the first trigger pulled when told to open fire this time...

  • sandor.l.varga - 2012-10-05 06:09

Need an urgent government intervention ASAP and issue real bullets. It worked in Marikana...

  • helio.paulo.7 - 2012-10-05 07:07

I am beginnig to think Marikana and Lonmin are the waterloo of SA mining economy...or perhaps even the economy of the entire SA. Those idiot management of Lonmin have created a massive problem for everyone else.

  • David Steyn - 2012-10-05 07:26

The best comment of the lot ntsiki.

  • David Steyn - 2012-10-05 07:33

Peanuts? I am not even a very clever person but I figure that I would rather earn peanuts than earn nothing.

  • peter.jefferies.90 - 2012-10-05 08:28

"Mineworker Jack Mxegilen said he was prepared to die for R16,000 they were demanding" REALLY!!!! One word SAVAGES The police should be firing live ammo, who do these savage miners think they are?? They have issue with the mine not the people who live in the area and yet they burn shops and hurt innocent people!! Shoot them all and get other people to work in their place!!!

      darryl.maze.5 - 2012-10-05 09:07

I agree. What gives these savage miners the right to burn and destroy shops. They should be dealt with in the harshest ways. They are putting innocent civilian lives at risk

  • andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-10-05 09:29

`These thugs, and the truck driver thugs, are holding the entire economy to ransom. They just don't want to work. There are educated people with degrees that don'e earn what these louts earn. They are losing money in the meanwhile because who can pay for non-production? The only ones laughing are the trade unions. They are coining it!

  • Jeff - 2012-10-05 10:38

Im impressed by the level of militancy and determination shown by mineworkers, mayibuye iAfrica
