Police disperse North West miners

Nov 12 2012 16:24
Johannesburg - Rubber bullets were fired at protesting miners after they barricaded a road leading to the Extrata Kroondaal mine in Rustenburg, North West police said on Monday.

"The miners threw stones at the police when they were asked not to disturb the flow of traffic. Police used rubber bullets to disperse them," said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.

At Union Platinum Swartklip mine, management considered closing down operations temporarily after mineworkers gathered outside the premises in small groups.

"The groups intimidated mineworkers who have reported for duty. Police are monitoring the situation."

At Anglo-American Platinum's (Amplats) Khuseleka shaft, 4000 mineworkers from Zakhele, Entabeni and Mfidikwe gathered at the mine earlier.

"They barricaded roads with stones and tree branches. Their leaders spoke with them and they dispersed peacefully. No injuries were reported."

A mine truck was burnt by unknown suspects at Amplats on Sunday night, said Ngubane.

No one has been arrested.
