Johannesburg - Over 7 000 National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members at Northam Platinum [JSE:NHM], Limpopo, will embark on a strike on Sunday after the employer's offer was rejected, the union said on Friday.
NUM was demanding a monthly increase of R2 100 for core workers and R2 000 for non-core workers, spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said in a statement.
The employer was offering 6.5% for non-core and 7% for core workers.
NUM is demanding the company raise wages by between 22% and 43%, depending on the level of employees, and increase housing allowances by 69%.The NUM served Northam Platinum with the notice to strike on Thursday after wage negotiations deadlocked.
"We reached a dispute, went to the CCMA and failed to find an amicable solution. We went further to propose another facilitator, renowned labour lawyer Charles Nupen, but we still failed," said Ecliff Tantsi, NUM chief negotiator at Northam Platinum.
The union was also demanding an increase in living out allowance.
Tantsi said they were determined to strike to deal with the company's "arrogance".
