Johannesburg - The Chamber of Mines will set up a special CEO “elimination of fatalities team” in an effort to bring down the number of deaths at South Africa’s mines, BusinessLive reported.

The task team will be led by AngloGold Ashanti CEO and Chamber of Mines vice-president Mark Cutifani and will share experiences and develop means of solving key challenges in mine safety, said the report.

“The Chamber of Mines and its members are deeply saddened that in the middle of this year, 63 mine employees have already lost their lives.

“The loss of one employee at work is not acceptable and the number of those who have already passed on is unacceptably high since our objective is to see every mine employee return home unharmed every day,” Chamber of Mines CEO Bheki Sibiya was quoted as saying.

“We are extremely grateful that the CEOs have taken this initiative as we believe that safety awareness and initiatives related to it need to be led from the top,” Sibiya said.
