Marikana kids' schooling covered

Marikana - Lonmin [JSE:LON] will pay for the education costs of the children of mineworkers killed in Marikana in North West last year, CEO Ben Magara said on Friday.

"We owe it to our late employees. We will not replace your loved ones... Lonmin will pay the education of 147 children until university."

He said the company was sorry for what happened.

Magara said he understood their plight and was committed to engaging workers on outstanding issues.

"I drilled, I supported the wall, and pumped water. I know the industry. I have been there," he said.

Magara was speaking at an event in Marikana to commemorate the killing of 44 people during a wage-related strike at Lonmin's Marikana operations.

Thirty-four miners were killed on August 16 when police fired on them while trying to disperse and disarm them.

Another 10 people were killed in strike-related violence in the preceding week.
