Johannesburg - Police ordered marching miners in Marikana to disperse on Sunday because they were gathering illegally, eNews has reported.

Miners were marching on the Rustenburg police station.

Ten police nyalas and a water cannon were deployed to disperse them.

Miners were mostly unarmed, but a few carried tree branches.

They complied with the order and headed back to a nearby informal settlement, according to the broadcaster.
