Lonmin halts operations after fatality

Johannesburg – Platinum mining group Lonmin [JSE:LON] announced on Friday that an employee has been fatally injured following a fall of ground incident at the Merensky section of the K3 shaft earlier today.

An investigation is currently underway. Management immediately stopped operations at the Merensky section and informed the department of mineral resources of the situation.

Lonmin said the Merensky section would remain closed until that investigation‚ which was being undertaken in partnership with all stakeholders‚ was complete.

Acting CEO Simon Scott said: "We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of our colleague who has died. Safety is our priority and something on which we will not compromise. We are working with the relevant authorities and stakeholders to fully understand the cause of this tragic accident."
