Cape Town – Iron ore (-21%), coal (-6.2%) and gold production (-2.3%) decreased year-on-year (y/y) in June 2015, while overall mining production increased by 4% in June and mineral sales increased by 5.7% y/y in May, Statistics SA announced on Tuesday.
Iron ore sales decreased by 36.9% y/y in May 2015.
Dressed in Springbok attire, Statistician General Pali Lehohla, said the main positive contributors to the 4% increase were platinum (0.8 percentage points), manganese ore (1.1 percentage points), diamonds (0.8 percentage points) and chromium ore (0.7 percentage points), while iron ore was a significant negative contributor (-4.5 percentage points).
Adjusted mining production increased by 1.1% in June 2015 compared to May 2015, while seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 2% in the second quarter of 2015 compared to the previous quarter.
