Johannesburg - Gold One International [JSE:GDO] advises that the
morning shift workers at its Modder East Operations embarked on an
unprotected strike on Friday.
According to the company no formal dispute had been declared, nor had it received a notice of the commencement of the strike action.
The company said it is engaging with the National Union of Mine Workers, which represents the majority of Modder East's 1 800 workers.
"Under these circumstances the strike is unprotected and may constitute fair reason for dismissal of the workers who participate in same," the company said in a statement.
The company has issued an ultimatum for the workers to return to work, and said it would continue to evaluate all options and would be implementing the policy of "no work - no pay".
"Management understands that the suspension of six employees after their alleged involvement in an underground incident on February 24 2012, when an underground shift supervisor was removed from his working place by a group of employees who demanded that he be withdrawn from underground, was the reason for the work stoppage," it said.
Gold One added that contingency plans were in place to manage the impact of the strike action, and that it would continue to keep shareholders informed on further developments.
