Johannesburg‚ – An underground fire is raging at Harmony Gold Mining Company's [JSE:HAR] Phakisa mine near Welkom‚ the group reported on Wednesday.

It said employees had immediately been moved to safety‚ but one person had still not been accounted for.

“The fire started late yesterday afternoon. Despite several attempts to find the missing person‚ the intensity of the smoke and the high gas levels are making it difficult for the rescue teams to search for the person‚” Harmony said in a statement.

Phakisa’s underground mining areas were linked with those of Tshepong. To ensure that employees of both mines were kept safe‚ production at both operations have been stopped‚ the group added.

"Proto teams are working non-stop to find our colleague and fighting the fire"‚ Graham Briggs‚ chief executive officer‚ said.
