Exxaro strike comes to an end

Johannesburg - The strike at several Exxaro Resources [JSE:EXX] operations has ended with workers agreeing to return to work next week, the mining company said on Saturday.

"In terms of the agreement, striking employees at the Matla, Arnot, Grootegeluk, Leeuwpan, Inyanda and Reductants operations will return to work on Monday," said human resources head Retha Piater.

She said employees would be paid a minimum of R2 800 in respect of the first quarter of the company's 2013 short term incentive.

The strike started on March 5 in Mpumalanga and spread to operations in Limpopo.

Workers embarked on an illegal strike over the non-payment of performance bonuses due to the operations having not achieved their performance targets in 2012.

"The focus now will be to re-start operations as soon as possible after employees have returned to their duties and undergone safety and training interventions," said Piater.

National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka confirmed that workers would return to work on Monday.

The NUM has maintained that it had not called on its workers to strike.

Piater said: "Exxaro is pleased with the outcome of the engagement between the company and the NUM, particularly as it has averted the possible negative effect that a prolonged strike could have had on Eskom's electricity generation," said Piater.
