Johannesburg - Exxaro Resources [JSE:EXX] said it’s treating 10 million litres of water daily at its R250m treatment plant at the Matla mine.
The facility “is set to reduce the safety risk posed by large quantities of water that have filled mined-out underground cavities,” the Pretoria-based company said in an e-mailed statement on Thursday.
Of the water treated, about 6.5 million litres will be discharged into the Olifants River, while the rest will be used at the operation located in the country’s Mpumalanga province, it said.
The company is developing a plant near Belfast that will start up by the end of the year, and another at the Arnot mine near Middelburg that will start up by 2017, it said.
