CCMA: Lonmin talks facilitated

Johannesburg - A meeting was held with a representative of striking Lonmin [JSE:LON] mineworkers to persuade them to comply with a peace accord, the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration said on Tuesday.

"The workers' delegation was accompanied by faith leaders," said the CCMA in a statement.

"The meeting was meant to afford CCMA facilitators an opportunity to persuade striking workers to comply with the peace accord."

The meeting took place at the CCMA offices in Rustenburg. The workers had selected their own committee to represent them at the negotiations.

Under the accord, signed by three unions representing some of the 28 000 employees at the platinum mine last week, it was agreed that wage negotiations would be re-opened, but only if workers stopped striking.

The workers' representatives and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union did not sign the accord, but did arrive for wage talks on Monday.

The commission said its facilitators were on Tuesday reporting back to mine management and the unions on the meeting's outcome.
