Johannesburg - Work will resume at Aquarius Platinum's
Kroondal mine on Monday, after it suspended operations for the weekend, the
company said on Sunday.
"Operations at the mine were suspended on Friday as a
precautionary measure, but (we) intend to open again tomorrow (Monday),"
spokesperson Charmane Russell said.
Over the weekend, the situation in the vicinity of the mine
was calm.
Seven people arrested near the mine on Friday were not
employed by Aquarius, she said.
On Friday, Aquarius said it had decided to suspend operation
to ensure the safety of its employees and assets in light of "the rising
tensions and protests within the regional workforce and communities".
Earlier that day a group of protesters marched from Anglo
Platinum's Blesbok stadium to the Aquarius Platinum's Kroondal mine, demanding
that it be closed.
Police dispersed the crowd using stun grenades and seven people were arrested for contravening the Illegal Gatherings Act.
