Johannesburg - Without former president Nelson Mandela, South Africa would not have reached its potential, mining company Anglo American [JSE:AGL] said on Friday.
"Without his legacy, South Africa would not have become the thriving country that it is today, and South Africa's economy would not have achieved the gains it has in the last 19 years," chief executive Mark Cutifani said in a statement.
"History will recognise him as a giant among men; as an iconic leader who fought throughout his life not only for equality, but for the basic human rights of all."
Cutifani sent his condolences to Mandela's family and South Africans.
"Madiba's immeasurable contribution to the country cannot be overstated," he said.
"He was integral to the ushering in of democracy in South Africa, and led the country with distinction, stature, and humility during his presidency."
Anglo American vowed to do everything it could to live up to Mandela's legacy by making a difference to all South Africans.
President Jacob Zuma announced that Mandela died on Thursday night at his Houghton, Johannesburg, home surrounded by family. He was 95.
