Num gives backing for nationalisation

Johannesburg - Resources giant Anglo American [JSE:AGL] said on Thursday said that nationalisation was not the right model for South Africa.

"We don't believe it's the road to go," said Anglo American executive director Godfrey Gomwe.

Speaking at a press conference, Gomwe said the group believed that the SA government supported free enterprises and that nationalisation was not government policy.

Looking at other countries that had adopted nationalisation, such as Zambia, this was not a model for SA, he said.

Anglo American chief executive Cynthia Carroll implied that Anglo was not overly concerned about the nationalisation threat.

"We believe in this country, we believe in free enterprise and believe that the government believes in free enterprise," Carroll said.

"We are therefore building for the future," she said.
