MWEB gets 70 000 uncapped clients

Johannesburg – Local internet service provider MWEB said on Friday that it had to date, attracted 70 000 customers to its low cost uncapped ADSL broadband offering.

Launched in March, MWEB claimed that its low-cost uncapped ADSL consumer and business offerings priced from R219 per month were 40% cheaper than other offerings.

It also claimed to be the first major player in South Africa to offer uncapped ADSL on a significant scale.

Carolyn Holgate, general manager of MWEB Connect, told I-Net Bridge: "Since launching our Uncapped ADSL offering in March this year, the service has seen a phenomenal response.

"To date, more than 70 000 customers have connected with MWEB Uncapped ADSL, which includes existing MWEB customers who had opted to migrate to the uncapped product. MWEB has a total base of over 320 000 subscribers."

MWEB utilises bandwidth on both the SAT3 and SEACOM international cable systems in order to have full redundancy on its international bandwidth.

However SEACOM, a provider of submarine fibre-optic cable connecting communication carriers in South and East Africa, reported a faulty undersea cable line between Mumbai and Mombasa on July 5.

MWEB said that the SAT3 cable, owned by Telkom [JSE:TKG], had ensured some redundancy, which was used primarily to re-route email traffic. And by July 9, using "alternative options" it had restored all of its international bandwidth and was running at full capacity.

SEACOM meanwhile confirmed on Thursday, that repairs to its faulty cable would be completed by Friday.

In May MWEB introduced six data-only ADSL packages for consumers and businesses. The consumer data-only products cost R219, R299 and R539 per month for line speeds of 384Kbps, 512 Kbps and 4Mbps respectively.
