Johannesburg - Cellular operator MTN said on Wednesday that it has agreed to continue its negotiations with Reliance Communications in relation to a potential business combination, and has extended the period of exclusivity until July 21 2008.
There is no certainty that these discussions will result in a transaction and accordingly, shareholders were advised to continue to exercise caution when dealing in their securities, it said.
The 45 days that MTN and Reliance Communications agreed on for exclusive merger talks expired on Tuesday.
A merger between MTN, the largest operator in Africa and the Middle East, and Reliance, the second-largest cell network in India, would create a telecoms titan serving 115-million people in 23 countries.
